If you have a dog, there will come a time when your dog will say to you “Don’t Wanna, Don’t Hafta”. That is the moment when you ask your dog to do something, and he ignores you. The question is, what do you do when this happens? I’m sharing what I do when my dog says “no” and the questions we need to ask ourselves. In the resources below, I’m referencing a number of previous podcast episodes that I strongly encourage you to check out with the context of what I say here in mind.

In the episode you'll hear:

• Why it’s important to value compassion more than ambition.
• Your right to have expectations about how your dog behaves.
• About your dog’s competing values.
• Why considering your dog’s stage of learning is vital.
• The importance of asking yourself if your dog is saying no due to fear.
• What I noticed with my puppy This! in class recently with a golf cart.
• My 5 keys for working through “Don’t Wanna, Don’t Hafta”.
• How to rehearse your dog doing what you ask, when you ask, with fun games.
• What it means to be the keeper of the joy.
• About hard-wired behaviours and “Don’t Wanna, Don’t Hafta”.

Hey everybody. Welcome to shape by dog. I am Susan Garrett. And if you have a dog,

0:15.0

there will come a time when your dog is going to say this to you. And that is, don't want to and I don't have to.

0:25.0

You're going to ask him to do something. It might be, um, come when he sees a squirrel. Yeah,

0:32.6

don't want to. Don't have to. Or it could be that you have thrown a toy and he sees other dogs running and he's,

0:42.3

yeah, I don't want to, don't have to. Obviously, dogs don't actually say those things,

0:48.2

but the appearance could be that that is what the dog's saying to you. So the question is, if you are listening to this podcast,

0:58.1

chances are you are trying to train your dog in a reinforcement-based program. The question is,

1:04.0

what do you do now? When my dog says, don't want to, don't have to. In the old way I used

1:10.3

to train with more punishment,

1:12.5

I would scold him. I would say, you know, that's not right. Or I might put his leash on

1:17.3

and correct him. I said, come, pop, come, pop. That seemed like a logical thing. No, that's not

1:26.3

the solution that Susan Garrett would choose. And yes, my dogs, there

1:31.5

will come a time when they will say, don't want to, don't have to. And if you keep listening,

1:35.6

you'll find out what I will do. But I'm first going to preface this by sharing something

1:42.8

that I heard recently. I was sitting

1:44.8

in my business mastermind now. I belong to this mastermind for more than 10 years and we normally

1:50.4

get together in person for three days at a time, three times a year. Obviously, with COVID,

1:57.0

we can't do that. And so we meet on Zoom and And Annie Heiman Pratt, who is in our group,

2:04.1

she had this amazing, profound statement that she was, you know, sharing something in her

2:10.6

business. And I'm like, wow, that is so applicable to dogs. And what she said is it's important that we all value compassion more than we value ambition.

2:24.9

I'm going to say it one more time.

2:26.4

It's important to value compassion more than we value ambition.
