Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Radical Candor podcast. I'm Kim Scott. I'm Jason Roseoff. And I'm Amy Sandler. You know, we talk so much about bad bosses and how they can negatively affect your well-being. Today we're talking about how having not just a bad, but an actually abusive boss can actually impede the career trajectory of folks in superstar mode more than people in rock star mode.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go to season four episode one of this podcast to get the T-L-D-R, or is it T-L-D-L on what we mean by that.

0:43.9

But in the meantime, Kim, quick summary, Rockstar Mode, Superstar Mode. Tell us what you were talking about.

0:51.0

People who are in Superstar Mode are gunning for that next job.

0:56.1

They're eager to invest a lot of the extra energy they have in life to their job and to growing in that job.

1:05.3

Either growth can be defined as learning a new skill or getting a promotion or whatever,

1:09.8

whereas people in rockstar mode

1:11.4

1:17.2

using that extra energy they have for something else that is going on in their life. Kim,

1:23.8

1:35.4

It may or may not be.

1:37.1

I mean, I think usually when, at least for me, I mean, I'd love to hear from you, Amy, and Jason.

1:45.8

When I've been in rock star mode, it has usually been because I've been in a job a certain amount of time.

1:55.3

I've gotten good at that job, but I don't necessarily want the next big job. I want to keep doing what I'm doing,

2:03.3

and I have something else going on in my life where I want to put my extra energy. So, like,

2:10.7

when I was working at Google, after I had been there a few years, I started writing a novel.

2:17.1

And that was like,

2:18.0

I was not gunning for the next big promotion. I was spending my extra energy writing a novel.

2:22.5

I mean, there have been other times in my life when I've gotten good at a job and I'm just

2:27.4

tired. I just kind of want to live my life and maybe take some extra walks.

2:35.8

Maybe I don't have some other sort of passion project, but I just want to be for a little bit.

2:41.8

And that's also, I think, important.
