Summary

The rising degradation of human life cannot be overlooked, as—recently—we witnessed New York’s governor signing an abortion bill into law as legislators celebrated their newly-expanded “right” to kill the unborn. If that wasn’t bad enough, a few days later Virginia’s legislators introduced an even more radical bill calling for abortion up to, and during, the process of the baby’s delivery.Have you asked yourself, ‘how did we get here?’ How can such a vile act become acceptable—even celebrated—by a “civilized” society? The crew has an insightful discussion about what defines “personhood,” according to Scripture, and the purpose of human life. What is our mandate as Christians, and how does the idea of covenant speak to this issue? How can the Church carry on God’s design for humanity, while witnessing to the secular world? In today’s episode, an unusual character—a prominent NYC pastor—receives kudos for speaking out against the new abortion law. Guess who?Show NotesDefending Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice by Francis BeckwithWe are happy to be giving away copies of Abortion by the late R. C. Sproul. Welcome to Mortification of Spin, the casual conversation about things that count count with Carl Truman, Todd Pruitt, and Amy Bird.

Mortification of Spin is a weekly podcast from the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals.

Let's join this week's conversation. Well, thank you for listening to Mortification of Spin today.

0:47.2

My name is Todd Pruitt, and I'm joined as always by Carl Truman and Amy Bird.

0:52.7

Today we want to talk about a serious topic.

0:57.2

We oftentimes, I think, usually talk about serious topics, but we're also quite willing to throw in some humor and irony along the way.

1:05.1

This is one of those subjects that really does not lend itself to that.

1:09.0

And of course, it has to do with the recent news that has flared up around the issue of abortion.

1:16.3

In recent weeks, there has been the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., which is, from what I understand, still, the largest human rights public demonstration in the world.

1:30.3

But that was followed quickly by a very disturbing development in the state of New York.

1:35.8

Governor Cuomo, along with the state legislature, celebrated quite vociferously the passage

1:42.4

of legislation that will allow for late-term abortions.

1:48.1

There's many states that do not allow, technically at least, don't allow for third trimester

1:54.9

or late-term abortions.

1:56.6

Of course, the implication here is that an abortion can be had over issues of, quote, the health or the well-being of the mother, up to the point of delivery.

2:10.1

And so there was great outrage over that.

2:12.0

Well, just the very next week in my own state of Virginia, state delegate Kathy Tran was introducing a piece of legislation

2:21.6

that she was sponsoring, dealing with late-term abortions. And in a committee hearing, she was

2:29.4

asked numerous questions, and she confirmed, rather uncomfortably, I might add, but she confirmed that her piece of

2:37.9

legislation would allow for abortions up to the time where the mother is actually delivering

2:44.8

the child.

2:45.5

Now, that's not something that I read into her comments, but she was repeatedly pressed because her
