Don McGahn was always an unlikely figure in Donald Trump's White House.

A long-haired libertarian who played league guitar in his own rock band, McGahn served

as the Trump campaign's chief lawyer, and then got tapped to be White House counsel.

McGahn eagerly accepted the job because he figured he could use it to achieve one of

the Republican Party's long-time goals to stack the federal courts with conservative judges.

But along the way, McGahn found himself a witness to some of the most alarming acts

of Trump's presidency, starting with Trump's tirades demanding that special counsel Robert

Mueller be fired as a way to shut down the Russian investigation.

As New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt details in his new book, Donald Trump v. the White

House, McGahn effectively turns state's evidence, and unbeknownst to Trump laid out for

Mueller exactly what the president had done.

It was an extraordinary scenario straight out of a Washington spy thriller, a White House

counsel secretly diving out the boss, testimony that threatened to sink his presidency.

We'll talk to Schmidt about McGahn's role in the Russia probe.
