Laurie Grinker grew up in New York City and in the early 1980s went to college at

Parsons School of Design at the New School.

I ended up taking a photo journalism class and we had to find a story to do and try to

get it published by the end of the semester.

In exchange for getting into dope seminars for free, Laurie would sometimes take photos

of the outside guest the school brought in to lead those classes, which is how she first

met a boxing manager named Jim Jacobs, who worked with a famous trainer named Customado.

He started to tell the stories and it was like this old man and there were these young

kids boxing, living at the house with Customado and I thought, oh that's a great story.

I would love to go upstate to Catskill, New York and photograph these kids.

So, on weekends, Laurie started making the three-hour trip up to Catskill and staying

at CUSS' big white house overlooking the Hudson River.
