live in conversation with Don Cheatel and Matthew Carnahan. House of Lies started its third season,

January 12th, on Showtime. The best part about being in season three, says Cheatel, is that they

don't have to spend as much time explaining their jobs as they did in seasons one and two.

In the show, Marty Khan, played by Cheetah is a management consultant who will do whatever it takes to land an account.

Now that the art of management consulting has been firmly established with the audience,

they can spend more time fleshing out the characters.

For Cheatel, that means exploring Marty's self-loathing, his loneliness, and his relationship

with his gender-curious son, Rosco.

This conversation was recorded live as part of the film Independent at Lackma screening series,

and just a heads up, it has some language that might be inappropriate for young audiences.

One of the things I was saying to Matthew backstage, Don, is that the show, especially in the last season,

and it feels like this way too, it feels like it's structured like a three-act play.

Like it's broken down that way.

And I was wondering if you guys, how conscious that is, and if that's something you work at,

or if it's just something that's happened over the course of the show.

Well, I mean, it's really under this man's sort of a helmet.

And that's not a word.

But he's obviously the brainchild behind this.

And what's great about it is I get to come in and just sort of be downloaded,

although I'm a part of the process.

They make me feel like I'm actually a part of the process.
