Ancient Greek poet, Ovid, wrote of the King of Cyprus and gifted sculptor, Pigmalion,

in his work, Metamorphosis.

Pigmalion devoted his life to carving ivory into figures so lifelike that one would expect them to breathe.

He was so infatuated with his creations in fact that living women paled in comparison for him.

He had come to shun and despise them, vowing never to marry.

He could only find solace from his self-appointed loneliness in his craft.

Then one day, after years of perfecting his craft, Pigmalion managed to carve the statue of a woman of such unparalleled beauty that he instantly fell into overwhelming lust.

He named his creation, Galathe.

Pigmalion dressed Galathe in only the finest of clothes.

He draped her in dazzling jewelry and crowned her head in colorful flowers to set off her lovely features.

He gifted her with objects of beauty and stared at her, delighted in adoration for hours.

Soon, the time of year to celebrate the goddess Aphrodite was fast approaching.

Offerings were being prepared for the goddess, and Pigmalion spent hours in prayer, begging for Aphrodite to turn his ivory creation into a real woman.

On the day of the festival, when Aphrodite heard of Pigmalion's feelings for his beautiful creation, she was deeply touched.

She decided that she would go to his workshop on her own to see the famous statue for herself.

She looked upon the statue in amazement.

Galathe looked just like Aphrodite.

She was beautiful, she was perfect.

And so, in that moment, feeling especially generous, Aphrodite granted Pigmalion his wish.
