As we move past the initial trial of Donald Trump and await the appeal of the decision not to remove Fani Willis and Fulton County,

the Department of Justice and Jack Smith returned to the foreground of the Battle for Accountability for Donald Trump.

Smith's two cases are not progressing without a hitch.

On the contrary, the January 6th case in Judge Tanya

Chutkin's courtroom is now in the Supreme Court

on Trump's immunity argument.

The court's decision is expected within the next few weeks,

and it could well have the effect of foreclosing any trial

before the election.

And the Marilago documents case, the prosecution

that is most clear-cut and by all rights already

should have gone to trial is tied up in Judge Eileen Cannon's Spider-Web and

its prospects for trial in 2024 also appear remote.

But Smith and the DOJ have some cards to play in both cases and are gearing up to play them.

Meanwhile, the department is in the process of trying two high

stakes high-risk high-profile cases against Hunter Biden and against New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez.

The Biden case is the latest chapter in a long running drama in which Special Counsel David Weiss, a holdover from the Trump administration, indicted

the president's son after a plea bargain unraveled unexpectedly in district court, all of

which makes this the ideal time for our quarterly or so
