Summary

We have entered a whirlwind of chaos and controversy as the new order attempts to reshape the American political landscape. In this episode Rick sits with Andrew Egger, chief White House correspondent for The Bulwark, to dissect the early months of Trump's second first term in the White House. They explore how a disruptive, Doge-fueled approach is reshaping federal agencies, from hasty cuts in key national security institutions to internal power struggles, and debate the evolution of conservative politics. And of course, Rick adds to the Enemies List. I'm your host, as always, Rick Wilson. I am delighted to be joined today by Andrew Eger, who is the chief White House correspondent for the bulwark. He's been on that gig for about a year now, formerly at the dispatch, some excellent writing in both those places. Andrew, I wanted to welcome you to the show, because as a couple of center-to-right guys, I'm curious what it's like covering the second Trump White House and watching this sort of hyper-populist thing that's developed and the Doge crisis that's developed and how you think the White House is handling its first month back on the job.

Yeah, am I allowed to put your whole audience to sleep by doing like a little bit of like ruminating right off the top?

Here's the thing that I've been thinking about when I've been watching this is that when I was like a kid, when I was in high school, I encountered the concept of Chesterton's fence.

1:59.2

You know, Chesterton's fence.

2:00.2

Yeah. If you see a guy, there's a fence across the road and, you know, a guy walks up to it and he just

wants to, wants to knock it over. He's like, I don't see what this fence is all about. I'm going to knock it

2:10.5

down. You can't trust that guy. The guy you can trust to maybe knock down the fence is the guy who can tell you why the fence was there, who can tell you what it was for. That's like the main thing for me personally, like as a conservative. That's what conservatism is to me,
