The way we dog train is different, and there are four elements that are vital to everything we do. It starts with confidence for people and their dogs and layers to grow a relationship of trust. There are many ways to use reinforcement in dog training, and our focus is on layered shaping, which might be a new concept for many people.
In the episode you'll hear:
• That the vast majority of people start wanting to know how to stop their dogs from doing things.
• Why our first step is creating a positive conditioned emotional response for dogs, so they feel good.
• That behaviour does not happen in an unemotional vacuum, and we want good emotions.
• How we want to minimize, and ideally eliminate, a conflict between people and their dogs.
• Why to use the things your dog loves in your training.
• That our dogs have a fun life, but we want to be aware of where they earn reinforcement.
• The reason to know what food, toys and activities your dog loves.
• How we want to begin with our dogs doing simple things.
• About using games that change our dog's physiology so they can be in their zone of genius.
• That once we've established value for our dogs, we want to transfer that value.
• Why our dogs want to do what we want because we empower them with choice.
• How we use classical conditioning first, so the bond between dogs and people is one of trust.

0:13.5 | it difficult to even put a name to what we do. And I realized that by saying what I do with all my |
0:19.7 | dogs and what we teach, all our students is layered |
0:21.9 | shaping, kind of created this image that when our students come to us in our online classrooms, |
0:28.8 | we say, yeah, grab a clicker, here's your roadmap to shape behavior. Let's go. That is not at all |
0:36.9 | what we do. And that led me to this podcast episode. |
0:41.4 | Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. Let me first establish that the vast majority of |
0:57.0 | people who join our online classes come to us because they want to stop behavior in their dog. |
1:05.1 | Maybe they want to stop chasing, car chasing, cat chasing. We've had somebody who wanted to stop |
1:10.7 | shadow chasing. Maybe they |
1:13.0 | want to stop their puppy who has grown to be nine months old and is still nipping or they want |
1:18.4 | to stop barking or leash reactivity or attacking power tools like the vacuum or the leash |
1:23.9 | blower or grows from there. A lot of these behaviors could be potentially fatal, |
1:30.2 | but at the very least a nuisance. Like, I want to stop my dog from ignoring me. I want to stop |
1:34.3 | my dog from running off with items. I want to stop my dog from escaping from the backyard. |
1:39.1 | So, 70% or more of the students who join our online classes are just like anybody else's students. |
1:46.4 | They want it to stop. |
1:50.0 | Now, people might have this idea that because I excel at dog sports that people join |
1:55.0 | our programs because they want to do dog sports. |
1:57.2 | And that just isn't the way it is. |
1:59.9 | So in the last podcast, I said that we don't teach |
