If someone says to you that they are a reinforcement-based dog trainer, what does that really mean? There are a lot of ways of training dogs with food or toys. Even though they fall under the reinforcement grouping, the different types of training are all dramatically different. We’re covering what I tried in the past, what I suggest you avoid, and the most effective way to shape your dog.
In the episode you'll hear:
• About training dogs by luring and using food or toys as a lure.
• What's termed observational learning or social learning, or sometimes modelling.
• About Stella the Kelpie and Bunny the Sheepadoodle using buttons to communicate.
• Some of the words that dogs understand and words that excite my dogs.
• What capturing behavior means and how to get a captured behavior like a stretch or talking.
• About shaping, and the critical difference between two styles used to shape a behavior.
• The reason I don't free shape these days and prefer layered shaping.
• How to make the correct choice for the dog the obvious choice.
• Why splitting behaviours down creates confidence for dogs and give you a strong foundation.

0:29.0 | Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. And you may not realize that there's a lot of different ways. Somebody may train their dog if they are a reinforcement-based dog trainer. Now, |
0:34.2 | the first one that most people would think about is luring, where you put a |
0:39.0 | food lure between your fingers and you lure the dog. But that is one of four or five or maybe |
0:46.7 | even six main ways that somebody could train their dog. And those five or six main ways aren't all |
0:53.6 | very dramatically different. |
0:56.5 | It's rare for somebody to use all five or six of them. Actually, I don't even know if it would |
1:02.2 | be possible. Let's find out. Methodology number one, I just said. It's luring. And so there's a |
1:09.0 | formula which is lure, behavior, reward. Meaning, you get the dog |
1:18.0 | luring with something they love. That's really important. You can't just say, oh, I'm just going to |
1:23.7 | pick a piece of food out of my pocket. My dog's going to follow it. The dog has |
1:28.6 | to love it. All right? So, lure to get a behavior. If you wanted your dog to sit, |
1:34.5 | you would put the cookie over their head. And that would cause like gravity to help the |
1:40.5 | butt to want to go to the ground. And so, you're going to get the dog in a sitting |
1:45.8 | position. And that is the behavior part of the lure behavior award. And then you deliver the food |
1:52.1 | to the dog. Okay? So, it's important to know, it's not just food that you can use for |
1:57.2 | luring. A lot of basic dog training is done by many, many people all over the world done |
2:02.9 | with a lure of some sort. So, you could use a tennis ball. If your dog loves tennis balls, |
2:08.5 | you could put the tennis ball up in the air or put the tennis ball on your hip if you wanted |
2:13.9 | your dog to walk on a nice loose leash beside you. There's a lot of different |
