that acknowledged the losses of every person, you know, every individual that I need in a clinical setting has lost something.

Their life has changed.

They've left a state of health that they were in before, and now they're struggling to regain equilibrium.

So it was really about honoring that part of it.

I think when you grow up knowing what it's like when people do not treat that experience with reverence

and don't treat, as you say, someone you love with dignity, it leaves...

It can be very traumatic, and it can also leave you with a kind of drive, sometimes even a kind of anger,

just to write that wrong through the story of your own life.

That's Dr. Jillian Horton, a physician and writer whose personal experience with the worst of medical care,

has led to a drive for the cause of compassion and medicine.

A recent book titled, We Are All Perfectly Fine, a memoir of love, medicine and healing,

is a beautifully written account of our own efforts to make medicine more caring,

as well as a powerful argument for rethinking how doctors are trained.
