Summary

Gavin Williamson is in trouble, again. This time the reveal of some expletive-laden texts he sent to then-chief whip Wendy Morton has raised questions for the government over why Williamson was brought back into frontline politics. On the podcast, Cindy Yu talks to James Forsyth and Isabel Hardman about whether the dual role of government whips (as discipline enforcers and pastoral carers) is confused and out of date.

So today Downing Street has put its full support behind Gavin Williamson as a Minister for the

0:27.8

Cabinet Office. This comes after some revelations of messages that he had sent to the then Chief Whip,

0:33.4

Wendy Morton. It's about telling us about what's going on in this round.

Well I think Gavin Williamson is a minister who's had more downing streets say they have full

0:43.0

confidence in than any other member of the government. Given his tenure as Education Secretary

0:49.6

and obviously a previous incarnation as Chief Whip, there have been one or two ups and downs

0:55.5

for Williamson in his career to date. And the latest one is, well there's two complaints. One

is a complaint made by Wendy Morton, former Chief Whip under Liz Truss. He was texting her

1:08.5

complaining that he hadn't been invited to the Queen's funeral and was making what it

1:15.2

being described as sort of failed threats saying there's a price for everything and telling her

1:21.5

that she wasn't doing her job very well. Now he was not the only person at the time who

1:26.4

was saying that Wendy Morton was not doing her job particularly well. But to couple it with

1:31.1

what is essentially the hissing fit of a grown-up man about not being invited something that's

1:36.1

nothing to do with him and sort of threatening her about consequences for that in her job

1:44.0

is if not bullying deeply unprofessional and childish frankly. And then there's a second

1:50.8

complaint which is that from another female minister who says that he made failed threats about

1:58.3

a sensitive matter in her personal life. His allies have said that he actually this was when
