that from April he'd be cutting taxes.

In fact, it would be the largest package of tax cuts in 50 years.

He promised that cutting taxes in this way would get the economy growing.

But the way the financial markets reacted was disastrous.

Now the British pound has fallen to its lowest level ever against the US dollar.

In early Asia trade, sterling fell to one dollar.

After less than a month in power,

Liz Truss' government had just caused a currency crisis.

To the rest of the world, it seemed unbelievable.

I think the UK is behaving a bit like an emerging market,

turning itself into a submerging market.

They'd added another strain to the economy,

at a time when millions of people across the UK

are struggling to even pay for their basic needs.
