Summary

We’re asking the big question: Does it matter who wears the mask? With the release of Captain America: Brave New World, where Sam Wilson takes up the iconic shield, we dive deep into the debate of whether it’s the character or the mantle that truly defines a hero. From Captain America to Zorro, we explore the fascinating history of legacy characters and how passing the torch has shaped some of the greatest franchises in pop culture. Does the symbol outweigh the individual? Or does the person behind the mask bring the meaning to life?

And that’s not all—joining us for this discussion is special guest Jonathan London, director and writer of Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy, a brand-new comic hitting Kickstarter on February 4th! Don’t miss your chance to support it here: https://herooftheprophecy.com.

Grab your shield, put on your mask, and tune in for this heroic conversation!

Does it matter who wears the mask?

0:15.4

So we're talking about legacy characters.

0:17.3

A legacy character is a character whose identity is passed down to them from an

0:22.8

older character in the form of a title, a job, or a persona for a newer character to assume. And there

0:30.1

are many ways that I can come about. Now, we are tying this into Captain America, Brave New World,

0:35.4

because it's the idea of Sam Wilson stepping into the role of

0:38.6

Captain America after Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Jonathan, our guest,

0:44.7

I have to throw it to you immediately out the gate. Yes, we have a guest, everybody. Why do you

0:49.2

think audiences care so much about who inherits a mantle like Captain America or even Batman.

0:57.0

I think the same reason that people love serialized content is the familiarity of it.

1:03.0

And while they love the familiarity of it and they love the idea that when they're going to put down a certain amount of dollars for a product, they want the same quality.

1:11.5

They do also like being surprised.

1:14.2

And so you have to find that balance between the twists and turns of an engaging storyline that continues.

1:21.4

And then the fact that these characters are all stuck in some form of a second act.

1:25.6

And it gets really, really tricky when you pass the mantle onto a new character

1:31.8

or an old character that you're familiar with, but just not in that light.

1:35.8

And they've been handled in a great way.

1:38.9

And they've sometimes been handled in a surprisingly, you know, unpredictable way where

1:43.8

the audiences didn't react.

1:45.6

But I think we go to comic stores and we pick up our comics.

1:49.3

We love these characters.

1:50.5

We sit down in our seats with our popcorn for the familiarity of them.
