Summary

Dr. Leighton Flowers, Director of Evangelism and Apologetics for Texas Baptists, addresses the question of God's love and hate. How can it be that God tells us to love our enemies while the Bible indicates that He hates His own enemies? Is God a hypocrite who tells us to do things He Himself is not willing to do?

No, God is not hypocritical. God does love all people, even His enemies.

This podcast covers the biblical case for God's love for all people... along with this article: https://soteriology101.com/2019/05/15/does-god-love-or-hate-his-enemies/

Hello and welcome back to Sociology 101.

0:10.0

Today we're going to talk about God's love, especially in light of some of the passages of Scripture which talk about God's hatred for his enemies.

0:19.0

Sometimes this can be a little bit confusing. In fact, many

0:22.0

authors have written on this from the Calvinistic perspective. D.A. Carson wrote the difficult

0:27.3

doctrine of God's love, the love of God, which, by the way, Dr. Carson, I think it's a lot

0:31.9

less difficult when you drop the preconceived ideas about Calvinism's form of theistic determinism. Yes, there's still some

0:40.2

difficulties in understanding wrath and love and God's provision and all of the questions that can

0:45.7

come with the doctrine of God's love for us and evil, the problem of theodicy. There are some

0:51.1

difficulties, I admit, but I think those difficulties are a lot less difficult when you drop the Calvinistic presumption of theistic determinism, i.e. God has ultimately decreed all things that come to pass in such a way that we don't have a choice as to whether or not we accept or reject the offer or provision of the gospel.

1:09.0

And so questions of God's love, I think, are a lot more easily answered from a provisionist

1:15.4

perspective than from a Calvinistic one.

1:18.4

John McArthur also attacked this issue, tackled this issue with the love of God because

1:23.9

he was being confronted with a lot of higher forms of Calvinism like that of AW Pink,

1:28.3

which was just coming right out and saying, God doesn't love everybody.

1:31.3

And he confronts that and tries to maintain that God does love all people.

1:35.3

And I have an article at Sociology 101 where I confront his version of love or his definition of love

1:41.3

from the Calvinistic viewpoint, if you want to go read that as well.

1:45.4

But before we dive into this question of God's love and hatred for his enemies, I do want to point you back to the Satriology 101 website, just so that you're aware of what's happening there.

1:56.9

You can see there. There's articles being posted all the time.

1:59.8

This is the one I'm just now referencing. Does God love or hate his enemies? You can find more information on the article there. Eric just now put out one answering Kevin DeYoung in his assertion that the reform church is the only true church. And he does a masterful job of picking apart DeYoung's comments there.

2:21.1

Can incoherence be biblical? Another great article by a guest blogger that I think you'll enjoy

2:27.4

reading. There's also information about my new book, God's Provision for All that you can find on
