So if I told you to think about the people who created social media, you'd probably think

about a certain type of guy.

But what if that's not the whole story?

We mythologized these Silicon Valley men, but actually as my reporting shows, they constantly

don't know what they're talking about and they don't know what they're doing.

And a lot of all these breakthrough features on social media, by the way, were actually

created by users.

A year ago, something big was happening on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media

platforms.

People were getting banned, like hundreds of thousands of them.

At the time, the United States was still reeling after the January 6 riots.

And these companies realized that they couldn't just keep kicking the can down the road when

it came to dealing with extremists.

The crackdown has been called the great de-platforming and it affected everyone from violent militia

groups to Donald Trump.
