Summary

For years, an array of health experts have been sounding the alarm on the questionable ingredients found in America's food, disconcerting cancer rates, and a variety of other health concerns involving the U.S. government's regulation of the food people eat, the medical care they receive, and the public health advice they are given. Now that President-elect Trump is preparing to return to the White House, how will he aim to address this issue, and can his Cabinet live out Robert F. Kennedy's goal of "Making America Healthy Again?"   Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University Dr. Jay Bhattacharya breaks down the current state of health in America, where he believes the government has gone wrong with health care, and how new leadership could drastically impact the National Institutes of Health and, as a result, American lives.   Follow Martha on X: @MarthaMacCallum Learn more about your ad choices. Dr. Jay, thank you very much. It's great to have you with us. You wrote so many powerful

1:19.7

editorials during COVID and gave hope, I think, to a lot of people who felt like the guidance

1:25.1

was misguided. You know, my first question for you is, I watched this current NIH director.

1:31.9

And honestly, I couldn't understand what she was talking about in terms of what their role is

1:37.8

and what they're supposed to be doing.

1:40.1

Did you understand what she was trying to convey there?

1:42.6

I think what she's trying to say is that the NIH has a lot of expertise and that if we get rid of, you know, a lot of that expertise that somehow the health of the American public will be harmed.

1:52.6

I mean, I'm not saying that that's wrong necessarily, but I think that the question is like, what is that expertise produced?

1:58.8

Has it really benefited the American people?

2:00.7

Like I think, for instance, the NIH invested in very dangerous... is like, what is that expertise produced? Has it really benefited the American people? Like,

2:06.4

I think, for instance, the NIH invested in very dangerous gain of function research that might have caused the pandemic, Martha, and they have not come clean. Reporters that have tried to look

2:11.0

into it have been blackballed from seeing documents that are even unclassified, that kind of transparency leads to distrust.

2:20.1

And it's partly, I think, why President Trump was elected. The next NIH director, whoever it is,
