Summary

Kyle Tucker’s $240 million deal with the Dodgers sparks a loaded fan debate. Calls flood in on whether Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Garrett Crochet is the better arm, and why the Mets came up short on both. Evan and Tiki break down what it really takes to beat the Dodgers in negotiations, why “being close” never works, and how absurd offers are now the baseline. The conversation turns emotional as Mets fans wrestle with a brutal question: did they dodge a bullet with Tucker, or was this another missed opportunity that only hurts because it feels familiar? There’s a deep dive into New York pressure, why stars thrive in L.A., and whether elite free agents truly want the Mets or just cannot say no to the Dodgers. By the end, one thing is clear: there are only a few teams at the top of the market, and right now, everyone else is playing catch up.

Let's kick it off with Lamar in New Jersey. What's up, Lamar?

0:16.8

Yeah, guys, I have three quick questions for you.

0:19.0

So my first one is, who's better?

0:21.4

Yamamoto or Garrett Crochet?

0:24.4

Yamamoto or Garrett Crochet?

0:26.5

It's probably crochet last year.

0:29.0

I don't know.

0:29.4

I'm biased because of what he did in the postseason was just, dude, it was spectacular.

0:34.4

You know how I would answer that?

0:35.5

I think moving forward, Antiquia love this. I have more confidence in crochet because of his body type. Yes, there you go. But they're both awesome. And they both could have been max. Is that your point, Lamar? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, in the case of Yamamoto, they tried. They made a major bit on the guy. Now, my critique at the time was, if you're going to negotiate against the Yankees and the Dodgers, you have to leave no doubt. You have to have a shock and on negotiation, so you can't let it be close. But doesn't it feel like the Dodgers, who really wanted him, would have done exactly what they did? You may be right. You maybe, I don't know ultimately, but I think it needed to be absurd. As far as Crochet's concern, it was a trade. And ultimately, I don't know what it was going to take, but what have I told you, Nolan McLean needed to be in the trade? Would you pause on that? Well, at the time you wouldn't. At the time, you would have been like, fine. Go ahead, good. You can have sprote too. Good luck. Because crochet was amazing. But where Lamar is accurate is that those are two pictures that the Mets absolutely pursued and they didn't end up with for very different reasons. In the Yamamoto case, the Dodgers, and in the crochet case, they just never met the ask that the Chicago White Sox had. Yeah, what did they get? I don't even remember. They got a ton of prospects in Boston, but they did well. Well, we'll see if they did well. Like in theory, they did no idea. Yeah. Let's go to Chris in Manhattan. Hey, Chris. Hey, guys, I'm borderline hyperventil, I'm doing my best here.

You know, guys, I think we might have dodged the bullet.

2:04.7

I was as excited as anyone, and about mid-afternoon yesterday,

2:08.6

I just started to look at Tucker's numbers and just stuff I heard about him,

2:12.4

and I had this sinking feeling that this guy would have gotten crushed in New York

2:15.8

if it didn't work out well.

2:17.3

All that stuff in Chicago, they gave him mental rest days. I guess, I mean, Tika, I'd love you to talk about, like, that wouldn't have flown here. Hey, Kay, uh, hey, Tuck, why are you taking a day off? You know, I just, I got to chill for a minute. Especially at 50 million a year.

2:34.4

I'm mentally exhausted day.

2:36.1

So, you know, I got to chill out.

2:37.9

So I'm going to take a couple days off.

2:39.9

You'd get crushed in New York for doing that.
