Summary

In Hollywood’s latest changing of the guards, Jeremy Zimmer has announced that he will be shifting from his post as CEO of United Talent Agency to executive board member. What’s behind the shuffle?  Plus, longtime Warner Bros partner, Village Roadshow recently filed for bankruptcy — even as arbitration continues over alleged financial losses due to the WB’s decision to release the Village Roadshow backed The Matrix Resurrections (2021) simultaneously in movie theaters and on Max. Kim Masters and Matt Belloni are here to unpack.

Masters also speaks to documentarian Alex Gibney about his mysterious new HBO project — The Dark Money Game. Gibney shares some big news about a change within Jigsaw (his production company). Plus, he reveals a very busy slate that includes projects on college culture wars, Luigi Mangione, and an ever-expanding documentary series about Elon Musk.

In these troubling times, he has some sobering and powerful words for filmmakers and journalists who may feel increasingly threatened by the Trump administration's actions.

The danger is that we huddle and hide. I used to say this about making films about Scientology or the Catholic Church or indeed U.S. torture policy. To some extent, there is

protection in being out front. It's harder to hide your detention in Guantanamo. And if there are a lot of us, it's hard to put everybody there.

Gibney joins me to discuss his upcoming but yet to be announced, HBO project called The Dark Money Game.

The filmmaker also talks his very busy slate that includes projects on college culture wars, Luigi Manjone, and keeping it very safe and non-controversial,

Elon Musk. But first we banter, stick around. It's the business from KCRW.

I am joined by my partner in banter, Matt Bellany. Hello, Matt. Hi there. So, a mighty oak

1:10.8

in the Hollywood forest has fallen.

1:14.4

Jeremy Zimmer. You wrote about this for Puck, and you used the F word, fired. They did not use

1:21.8

that word at FDA. They said that Jeremy Zimmer was shifting to a role as board member and executive chairman, okay?

1:31.1

Yeah, well, no one in Hollywood has ever fired. We both know that. Everybody always chooses to spend time with their family or something.

Now, Jeremy, he did oversee a lot of expansion at UTA, and UTA has always been, as long as we've known them, I think, kind of the number three behind CAA and WME and wanting to be on the same level and arguing with us, for example, when we used to be at the Hollywood Reporter, that they should be on the same level.

2:01.0

But they are not CAA or WME.

2:04.4

Nonetheless, Jeremy and his partners built a very credible business with a lot of good clients.

2:10.5

But Jeremy was always like not the easiest personality in my experience, and I suspect yours.

2:15.8

And I would say if you asked me at any time during

2:19.7

my entire tenure covering this town, which agency is the most difficult to deal with? I would have

said UTA.

2:26.1

Listen, whenever there is a change at the top of any of these companies, you start to look at why.

2:31.3

And UTA, well, a great business, and Jeremy props to him for putting this business
