The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others.

Devote yourself to your community around you and devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you,

and devote yourself to creating something that gives purpose and meaning.

Well, it turns out that every day offers the same opportunity to invest in activities and

efforts and work and in conversations that build others up or to choose attitudes and words and actions that push

others down. The choice we make profoundly influences how we feel about our lives and our capacity

to positively impact the lives of those around us. Let me explain. After boarding a flight years ago, I settled into my typical in-flight routine, buckling my seatbelt,

getting out a little snack, setting up my journal and my laptop, and then preparing for a couple

hours worth of work.

Before I could get started, though, I overheard a conversation

a row behind me that changed my entire focus. An elderly-sounding woman shared with the person

seated next to her that this was the first trip since the death of her husband. She mentioned

she was nervous to travel, but was looking forward to

having someone to talk to on this trip. The gentleman responded somewhat currently,

Hey, I'm really sorry about your husband, but I'm using this flight for sleeping, not talking.

Now, my friends, I am not judging the man.

I'm really not.
