If you were listening to things unseen yesterday, you'll maybe remember two things.

0:13.3

First that our theme for the week is Christians love to sing.

0:17.5

And second, I signed off with a question.

0:20.6

Hardly the most profound soul-searching question

0:23.1

you've ever been asked, but nevertheless, I meant it quite seriously. Do you own a hymn book?

0:30.2

Remember, I was suggesting that next to a good Bible translation, a concordance, and a decent one-volume

0:35.7

commentary, a hymn book is perhaps the most important book you could own.

0:40.3

And part of my reason for asking the question

0:43.3

is because I've come to suspect that many Christians today

0:47.3

don't actually possess a hymn book.

0:50.3

That's a huge contrast with the church culture of 50 years or so ago. When I became a Christian,

0:57.3

1:02.6

your own Bible to church, but your own hymn book too. Now, I realize there's something very

1:08.3

convenient about the church supplying everything you

1:11.1

need for the worship service.

1:13.9

But I actually think it's been at a cost.

1:17.2

For example, it's no longer clear to your neighbors when you leave for church that that's

1:21.9

where you're going with the book in your hand.

1:25.4

But there's something else. Part of the loss in some churches is that you end up

1:30.5

at the mercy of seeing the words you're singing only on a screen. And I think you can become a victim

1:37.1

of the law of unintended consequences. If your church uses a screen, let me urge you today to buy a hymn book.

1:46.4

You owe it to your Christian growth to own one.
