Summary

The Declaration of Independence is one of the greatest political documents ever written. And now…I think we need another one. This one is not written to a tyrannical king, but to our fellow countrymen…if we can even call them that anymore. I don't say this to be divisive, I say it because it's the truth. And while all of us can accept that the truth can be divisive at times…for those who use offense as a substitute for an argument, truth is divisive all the time…because your real problem is not with my tone or privilege or any other contrivance, your problem is with objective reality. For such a person, the truth will always be divisive. So here it is…my Declaration of Independence from you.

The Declaration of Independence is quite possibly one of the greatest political documents

ever written.

And it becomes easy to take it for granted because we're about to celebrate the 249th anniversary

0:12.0

of the United States, or at least the separation of the colonies from England where they became

0:20.0

states. But I think when you,

0:23.2

when you really look at the principles that were listed in Declaration of Independence,

0:27.1

along with the grievances, um, along with the justification for independence, it's

0:32.0

incredibly powerful. And there's no question that that document, more than any other, really laid out kind of the

0:38.8

philosophical underpinning of what the United States was supposed to be. Now, a lot of people

0:43.6

will look at it and say, oh, how ironic somebody talking about individual liberty who also

0:48.6

held slaves at the time. And there's no question that that was a contradiction, but the

0:51.7

beauty of the Declaration of Independence is that it was understood to be a contradiction at the time. It was understood to be a contradiction

0:56.9

by Thomas Jefferson. But he was still fighting for a higher principle. And what ended up

1:03.7

happening over time, and this was something that was predicted, was that either the United

1:08.6

States was going to live up to the principles of the Declaration

1:10.8

of Independence or it would cease to exist. And what we've seen over time when we've had

1:15.9

questions, whether be with things like civil rights, whether it be with slavery, whether it be

1:21.2

with a number of other issues, is the United States has repeatedly, more often than not,

1:25.2

chosen to live up to those principles rather than to sink from them. And I think that makes us an incredible country. However, we're at another turning point within U.S. history. I believe we're at a significant turnipoint in U.S. history where there is a number of people that have a very, very different view of the United States, both from our history, as well as our founding, and a very, very different idea for

1:45.2

what the United States should look like going forward. And so what we're going to do today

1:49.3

is we're going to look at the original Declaration of Independence. And then we're going to ask

1:53.2

ourselves, what would a new one potentially look like as we have these discussions with
