Summary

Patrick Madrid had such a touching moment on his show when a sweet little girl named Emily from Texas called in with a really deep question. She asked, "Do babies who die in their mommy's tummy go to purgatory because of original sin?" You could just hear the innocence and sincerity in her voice, and Patrick's response was so kind and thoughtful.

He gently explained that no, those babies don’t go to purgatory. Purgatory is a place where souls go to be purified from sins they've committed during their lives, but unborn babies haven't had a chance to commit any sins at all. So, it wouldn’t make sense for them to be there.

Patrick then broke down the idea of original sin in a way Emily could understand. He used this really simple analogy: imagine your parents were billionaires (how fun would that be?!) and you were supposed to inherit all that money. But then, because of something your parents did, they lost it all, and even though it wasn’t your fault, you miss out on the inheritance. That’s kind of what original sin is like—it’s something we inherit from Adam and Eve, but it’s not because of anything we personally did.

What about those babies who don’t get a chance to be baptized? That’s where the Church trusts in God’s mercy. Patrick explained that while the Church doesn’t have an exact answer, it hopes and prays that God, in His love, gives those babies the grace they need to enter heaven. And he reminded Emily that God loves those babies even more than their parents or siblings ever could, so we trust that they’re safe with Him.

Patrick's ability to take such a big, complicated question and make it so clear and comforting was really beautiful.

Bottom line: We don’t know exactly what happens to miscarried babies, but we have every reason to hope that God, in His infinite love and mercy, welcomes them into heaven. And we can trust that one day, their families will be reunited with them in God’s embrace.

If you've suffered a miscarriage, the pain is real, and Relevant Radio is always here to pray with you and support you through the journey of grief. You are not alone.

Well, go to Emily first. She's a little girl listening in Texas. Hi, Emily. Hi, Patrick. Would babies die in your tummy?

0:08.4

Do they go to purgatory because they have original sin? That's a great question. So when a baby

0:15.0

dies in mom's tummy, they don't go to purgatory. And I'll explain why, because purgatory is that place of purification

0:23.5

for the person who dies and is going to go to heaven, and yet has some sins on his soul, some stains or scars of sins

0:34.2

that have been forgiven, and maybe some venial sins. And that's where the Lord,

0:40.3

in his fiery love, he purifies that soul to prepare it to go into heaven so that it will be

0:46.6

completely clean and free from any sin. So the reason that the unborn babies don't go there is

0:51.9

because they've never committed any sins. Now, it is true

0:55.5

that they are conceived in the state of original sin, but that doesn't mean that they committed any

1:02.3

sin. What it means, Emily, is that when Adam and Eve sinned and they fell, you know that story,

1:08.5

right, about Adam and Eve in the garden and all that? Yes, sir. Okay. So when they fell, you know that story, right, about Adam and Eve in the garden and all that?

1:12.4

Yes, sir.

1:13.1

Okay.

1:19.5

So when they fell and committed that first sin, what happened was they lost all of those great gifts God had given them, including to be able to live forever.

1:23.6

But they lost their grace, and they lost the ability to hand these gifts on to their children

1:30.9

and their grandchildren and so on. So here's a way of thinking about it. Let's say that your mom and

1:36.4

dad were billionaires. Can you imagine if they had billions and billions of dollars and they were so wealthy and you as their child would inherit

1:48.7

did you know what that word inherit means yes sir okay let's say that you're legally because you're

1:55.6

their daughter you would legally inherit all of that wealth all of of that money. It would come directly to you.

2:02.8

But I know your parents would never do this. But let's say that some other parents who had billions

2:07.8

of dollars, let's say that they committed some really serious crimes and they went to jail.

2:13.3

And they lost all of that money because of what they did. Now, you didn't do anything wrong,
