It's been a long, cold winter. Springtime is finally here. All the leaves are green and the flowers are blooming.

And just when you think it's safe to go back outside.

Oh no.

Allergies are back.

Just like clockwork, every year I'm sniffling and sneezing.

But it's not just plants that cause allergy problems.

Some people have allergies to animals like cats or horses.

And allergies to food like peanuts and milk are pretty common too.

But if humans have lots of different kinds of allergies,

do other creatures have similar problems?

Not in the way that we think of an allergy,

and, you know, where we get the pollen in our nose

and we sneeze and we get the red, itchy eyes.

Specifically, an allergy is when your immune system sees something foreign and overreacts to it. So an antibody is a protein. In humans, we have

five types. Allergies, as we think of them, and humans involve a type of antibody that we call

IGE. The IG stands for immunoglobulin, and that's just another term for the word antibody.
