Today's tip is to do a safety check in your home.

Don't wait for an emergency to figure out what to do in an emergency.

Or to make sure everything is working.

You need a plan to keep your household safe.

Many of us have more of a vague sense of whether we have emergency supplies in our homes.

And whether everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

But it may have been a while since everything got checked.

There is never a perfect time to think about safety.

You can do it anytime.

And as we often discuss on this show, things you can do whenever, often happen, whenever.

So how about this weekend?

Block off an hour or so to think through safety issues.

Maybe you will never need anything you check on or think about.

And then you can count yourself very lucky.

And if you do need this information someday, you will feel very lucky that you have it.

First thing, do you have smoke alarms everywhere you need them?

Do they work?

Check any carbon monoxide detectors too.
