There's a little bit of a journalism 101 background, but I can't relay this to you without explaining it, so just hear me out on it.

One thing that happens quite commonly in our line of work is that we will be told certain things

off the record, and that's almost always the exact terminology that gets used.

Off the record, there will also be entire conversations that are

conducted off the record. Now, those things will remain off the record if you are a responsible

professional journalist and you have interest in maintaining relationships. However, and this is where it can get a little bit

sticky, somebody else tells you the exact same thing that you heard in the initial off-the-record

conversation, and that somebody is knowledgeable, reliable, trustworthy, shackles are off.

You can report to your journalistic heart's content.
