I had my head down in the press box in Denver a couple of weeks ago.

Was typing something under the screen, not focused at all, and what was happening on the ice.

And on top of that, there was a break.

Then, the roar.

The people rising to their feet in tribute to Sam Gerard.

The great Sam Gerard was greeted in a manner befitting a triumphant return of a war hero.

I mean, it was throbbing in there, not exaggerating.

Really, one of the louder welcome home ovations

that I can recall experiencing anywhere. And this, for me, followed lots of people there in Denver,

but before that, too, telling me, oh, you're going to love this guy.

He's just terrific.

And they weren't referring to him as, like, an interview.

They were referring to him as a hockey player.

Pittsburgh's going to love this guy.

And I find myself still thinking they can't all be wrong. They can't all be misfiring that badly,

including the 18,000 plus in the Avalanche's Arena.
