The most goals ever scored by a player age 40 or older in NHL history, a single season, was 44 by surprise.

had those 44 goals in the 1968-69 season for the Red Wings. After him, there's a drop-off

Johnny Busek, the Boston Great, had 36 goals.

Alexander Ovechkin just now, this past season, had 32 goals.

Timo Salani had 31 in the 2010-11 season for the Ducks.

The list isn't long, even if you go over combined goals over multiple seasons after turning 40,

it still ends up being pretty much Howe and Salani and of course Yarmir Yager,

who I just feel obligated to throw in, had 97 goals in the NHL after turning 40.

And still, I don't think he's officially retired yet, is he?

Well, maybe he never will, but Gino will.

And I think that'll be sooner rather than later.

In fact, there's a part of me that wonders

if we aren't just looking at a formality in terms of this being the great Evgeny Malkin's final

season in the NHL. He will turn 40 at the end of this month, but he will do so with a contract in hand for at least one more year.

And presumably the understanding that some things are going to have to be a little bit different.

That's something that Kyle Dubus made almost uncomfortably clear at the time of the

contract being announced.
