Summary

I recently did a video on the DJI Phantom 3 Professional quadcopter that I've been using. I've had several people since ask me about the camera settings that I am using on the Phantom 3. Aerial photography and video work is similar to landscape in that you have a very wide dynamic range that you have to deal with. Its difficult to capture in digital format. The Phantom 3 features a Sony Exmor sensor… having said that it is a decent camera, but not incredible. There are some settings that you can use in the DJI Go app that will help with your footage considerably. I will explain these in this video. I've recently did a video about the DJI Phantom 3 professional edition that I've been using and I've had a couple people ask me about the camera settings that I've been using.

0:08.0

And so I thought it would be cool to do a video today to do a quick walk through on the settings and talk about how you can optimize the camera to get the best possible footage.

0:15.2

Now, aerial photography and video is very similar to shooting landscape photography in that the biggest challenge that you have is working with a really wide dynamic range. This means that

0:24.1

shadow detail and highlight detail are the most difficult to balance and retain.

0:27.8

In most daylight conditions the sky stays really bright compared with the

0:31.2

ground which starts to retain a lot more of the dark shadows and

0:34.1

shooting during sunrise or sunset will intensify all of this. The Phantom 3 uses a 12

0:39.3

megapixel Sony XMore sensor which is the same sensor that they use in the GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition.

0:45.2

It's a very decent sensor and it's combined with a lens that has a fixed 2.8 aperture, which

0:50.4

is pretty wide.

0:51.9

And so there's some other things that you'll need to do with

0:53.6

filters to lower your shutter speed if it's a cinematic look that you're looking for.

0:56.9

Now I will say this the Phantom 3 camera is pretty good it's not incredible and

1:02.2

so that's why having your camera

1:03.9

settings just right are going to give you the most flexibility in what you're

1:06.8

going to be able to do in post-production and that's what we're going to talk

1:09.2

about in this video. So to make changes to your camera settings we're going to do this from the DJI Go app.

1:15.0

And I want you to note that I'm not actually connected to the quadcopter right now because I'm doing a screen recording off of this.

1:21.0

But in order for your settings to take effect, you do need to be

1:24.4

connected to the Phantom 3 and everything needs to be powered up and talking to each other.

1:28.5

But in order to change the settings, what you're going to do is on the panel that's over

1:31.7

on the right that is all your camera controls. You're going to do is on the panel that's over on the right that is all your camera
