Summary

Self-watering container designs are a dime a dozen, but this one is special. It's got drainage holes, a 6" water chamber, and perfect wicking action to make sure the soil layer is well-irrigated...all for about $10. How do you super-charge your soil with good, inexpensive organic matter? What's up everyone? Welcome back to the show. Hope you having a fantastic day and hope wherever you're at is a little bit less hot than where I'm at right now.

I am currently recording this in the office and it is let's see 6 16

0:17.0

p.m. and it's still hot as heck in here so I'm, but you know what I'm going to put up with the

0:25.2

suffering and I will be here for you and today we're talking about self-watering

0:30.3

planters. Now there's a million and one ways to construct something like this but

0:35.8

I've stumbled upon a design that I really really like and it's exceptionally cheap to make.

0:41.2

So I have a video forthcoming on my YouTube channel. By the time this

0:44.8

podcast comes out the video probably still won't be up yet because I have some tweaks

0:48.2

I need to make, but it will be up in the YouTube channel so I'd encourage you to

0:51.8

go over and subscribe to that.

0:53.3

But the way I designed it is that it is as cheap as I could make it, right? And the materials are fairly common

0:59.6

that you can find no matter where you live in the world almost definitely I would say so here

1:06.4

we go this is how you would construct it first thing you're going to need is a five

1:11.0

gallon bucket now you'll want one that also comes with a lid because the

1:15.3

lid is actually crucial to this design. The next thing you'll want is a one inch

1:21.2

piece of PVC.

1:23.3

Now, I made a mistake and I got one inch interior PVC

1:27.7

instead of one inch exterior PVC.

1:29.4

So my one inch wholesaw bit that I was gonna use actually didn't fit and I had to kind of

1:34.8

route out the hole a little larger just to get it in but that wasn't that big of a

1:38.9

deal. So the next thing you'll need is some kind of platform or something to hold the lid up because we're going to be cutting the lid out and putting it down into the bucket to form the barrier between the soil and the water.

1:53.0

So you'll need something like that.
