Summary

Dirt poor and struggling with a severe speech impediment, Billy Sunday Birt grows tough and violent. He quickly replaces reading and writing for whiskey-running and armed robbery. While Birt’s reputation for retribution is no secret, the people of Barrow County don’t suspect how cruel he is until neighbors start disappearing and bodies begin surfacing along the banks of the Mulberry.
