In today's podcast, we're going to be addressing a topic that's pretty high-yield.

Here's the thing.

Our friends are the MBMEs, you know, especially after step one became pass fail,

they started putting a ton of basic science on step two and step three.

So I feel like these days the basic science really throws a lot of people off.

So with this podcast, I want to try to address a lot of those high-yield basic science things that, you know, to help you brush up some stuff from Step 1, you may have forgotten, but not just that to just help you know this material well and know it in the level of detail that you want you to know it for the USMD, Step 2, Ski, and step 3 exams. All right.

So, we're going to jump right into it.

So, what if they give you a question about a patient?

They tell you that this patient has a history of microcellic anemia,

and the patient's reticulocyc count is extremely high,

and that this person has required multiple transfusions, multiple transfusions.

And then they tell you that this person,

they'll ask you a question like which of the following should be done

to reduce this person's risk of negative long-term outcomes.

But I hope you're saying that, oh, divine, this person should get some kind of iron

kill later. So what's going on with this person? Well, this person clearly has thalassemia.

Remember, thalassemia is a microstatic anemia. It's one of those high-yield microstatic

anemia that will be associated with a higher-a-tick count on the exams. Because in thalassemia,
