Summary

In Episode 2 of his podcast, Rabbi Daniel Lapin laughs at some jokes, chats about his pet chimpanzee and recounts the passing of his parents. All this in order to disclose how much of our lives depend on distinguishing the spiritual from the physical. Whether in romantic relationships, professional partnerships, or social affiliations we need to learn how to nail down the spiritual before the physical. That is why babies are conceived (of) before they are actually born. But wait, there's more like the time he tried to become a swimsuit model. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Hello everybody, I'm Rabbi Daniel Lapin, and I want to welcome you to this show, Rabbi Daniel

0:19.6

Lappin on the Blaze, and this is actually episode two.

0:24.1

And I very much hope you've had an opportunity to hear episode one. And if not, you'll still

0:29.6

have an opportunity to do so, because I think that what we're going to be discussing now

0:33.8

stands on its own, but nonetheless, the first one does fill in some important areas.

0:42.2

What we spoke about then was the idea that there's one really gigantic, fundamental, existential

0:52.4

question that if you knew how anybody feels about this question, you would be

1:00.2

able to pretty much predict where they stand on almost every hot-button topic of the day.

1:08.9

And that question was, and it's disturbingly simple, how did human beings

1:16.0

arrive on this planet? And there are a number of people who are absolutely sure that they

1:24.6

know the answer. Some of those people, me included, believe and beyond believe,

1:31.8

that the good Lord created us in his image and put us here. And by virtue of the fact that we're

1:37.9

touched by the finger of God, that makes us entirely different from every other life form on the

1:43.6

planet. And so, for instance, if I was trying

1:47.9

to understand why human beings tell jokes, I would immediately say to myself, well, we tell jokes about certain things. Maybe the things we tell jokes about

2:04.9

could help us understand why this characteristic is found in the human species. We tell jokes about

2:14.1

God, right? And those are the jokes like, you know, Mr. Jones arrived in heaven and he went up

2:21.2

to the pearly gates and you know how that one continues in its millions of variations. Or how about

2:26.7

the one about the rabbi, the priest and the pastor who walked up to the bar and you know that one. But

2:33.2

these always hinge on the fact that there's a religious dimension,
