Where in China is it safe for a dissident on the run.

Guangchung had managed to slip past the guards and out of his house.

He scaled the wall and badly injured his foot.

He was in desperate need of a place to hide.

After escaping Deng Shigu, he made it to the home of a sympathetic family in a nearby village,

and from there to another safe house a hundred kilometers away.

But time was running out. He needed a plan.

In fact, when I fled to my neighbor's house in the West Village,

I was thinking about how to get news from the outside world

because I didn't have a cell phone at the time

and he didn't have a cell phone, a telephone or a radio.

Guangchung told us that the neighbor helped him find a used radio and a cell phone so he could contact people

and keep ahead of the news. And that's how he got the idea for his next move.

That night when I was listening to the shortwave radio,

I heard from a foreign station that Wang Li Jun have fled to the U.S. consulate in Chandu.

Wangli Jun was the deputy mayor and police chief of Chong Ching, a city in southwestern China.

One day he showed up at a nearby U.S consulate with a story about a murder. The story he told was salacious, with all the

trappings of a soap opera plot, and in a matter of days it spiraled into a massive diplomatic
