Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip discusses the broad topic of disfluency with journalist CHERRY BURNS!

Those of you familiar with Pip's Twitch channel and the community within might well be familiar with Cherry, but if not, all is well as here is your formal introduction! Although their role is two-fold, as guest and interviewer, with Pip as the subject. Today (at time of episode publishing) is Wednesday 22nd October, which is International Stammering Awareness Day. With Pip being a person with a stammer as well as a patron of the organisation Stamma, it would be a missed opportunity to celebrate the event and that is exactly what's going down today! This is a chance for those of you who stammer, as well as those of you who do not, to listen in on a conversation covering a vast amount of points and topics within the greater world of stammering that you might not usually hear. It's a wonderful chance to gain some insight into not only what it is, but how it can come into play in day to day life, the issues that might otherwise go unseen or unheard, but also the added compensatory factors that can kick in as a result. Something that comes up in the chat is about how stammering is not the problem, it's how the world meets the stammer that is the problem, which is a really interesting swing on it all. So please, listen and enjoy, it's a really fun episode and definitely one we can all gain something from, and ultimately celebrate. Shouts to Cherry too for being an awesome guest interviewer!

I didn't plan on saying that. Now I've said it out loud.

0:21.8

I feel really old. Anyway, the focus for International Stammering Awareness Day this year, hashtag

0:28.8

ISAD, is to try and push more businesses to have greater access and assistance in ways other than making a phone call. A lot of people

0:40.0

who stammer or have a variety of disfluencies have, number one, struggle with phone calls,

0:46.5

but number two, have a lot of trauma around phone calls. For many of us, the first or an early

0:52.1

traumatic experience of our disfluency will be involving a phone

0:55.9

call. There's something really interesting about it being audio only. Like it can cause extra

1:01.0

confusion, extra tension. And you'd be stunned at how many companies have no way of contacting

1:07.4

them or resolving issues other than making a phone call. So I wanted to do a podcast

1:11.7

kind of talking about that, but I didn't want to just sit here and talk to you on my own. So I hit up a

1:16.5

friend of mine, Cherry Burns. Now, Cherry is a great journalist, a great Twitch stream and a great

human. And I said, would you be up for interviewing me on my own podcast? Which is weird.

1:28.6

And they said yes.

1:29.6

And I'm recording this outro minutes after we've recorded the conversation.

1:35.1

And honestly, I've had the best evening.

1:37.7

I've not had the best week, ladies and gentlemen.

1:41.0

So we recorded this on the Sunday.

1:43.2

So to end the week with this conversation was so beautiful. Cherry is such a articulate, intelligent, thoughtful and caring person. And I'm delighted to have shared this conversation with them. It's a really fun and engaging and intriguing conversation. I swear it's not just going, oh, it's really hard having a stammer.

I sad. It's not that. So please tune in and give it a listen because there'll be some really
