Summary

Former USMNT defender Steve Cherundolo joins the show to discuss his start in Germany, Americans playing in the Bundesliga, his future aspirations, and the current state of the USMNT.

There's also a bonus segment at the end of the show (about 10 minuets) recorded in the lobby of our hotel in Frankfurt. It was after a very late night, so credit to Steve for sounding chipper throughout.

Hello, everybody, and welcome to the Total Soccer Show.

0:19.3

I'm your host Taylor Rockwell.

The legendary Daryary Daryl Grove is not with me today. So I'm instead going to be joined by a legend of a different kind. It's Mr. Steve Chorundelow. We met Steve when we were in Germany. He was really, really candid about life in Germany, about his time with the national team, about his thoughts on the future of Americans in the Bundes League, and many, many other topics. He was great to get to chat with. And we wanted to talk with him about those things and many other topics on the show. So that's exactly what we did. So I will turn it over to me asking questions to former captain of Hanover, made 87 appearances for the U.S. Ben's national team, Mr. Steve Durandolo. With me on the other end of the line, all the way from Germany, I'm assuming.

I've got a national team legend, the mayor of Hanover. It's Steve Chorotelo. Hello, Steve. Hey, thanks for having me. You are welcome. Thank you for being here. For folks who are newer to soccer, we should clarify that Steve went to, I believe, three World Cups, played his entire career at Hanover and Germany, has since moved into

coaching. He also put up with me peppering him with questions on a fairly consistent basis while

1:16.0

we were in Germany. So thank you for that as well, Steve.

1:19.6

I can tell by the level of enthusiasm there. But I wanted to get your thoughts on the U.S. national team.

1:28.7

I wanted to get your thoughts on Americans in the Bundesliga.

1:30.6

But I first wanted to start with a bit about your background.

1:34.6

How old were you when you moved to Germany?

1:37.6

I was 19, almost 20, when I first moved to Germany.

1:41.5

Just, yeah, just after my third semester in college.

1:46.3

And as far as I understand, like, you are from Southern California, didn't really have much

1:52.1

experience with Germany, did not speak German, were maybe not quite prepared for the weather

1:56.7

that you were walking into. What was that experience like when you first went there when you first

2:00.8

signed for Hanover? It was kind of a scary experience. You know, I first got off the plane. I

2:08.6

remember for my trial week that was in December of 98, snow everywhere, which is fine. I've

2:15.7

obviously been skiing prior to that.

2:19.2

In California, we have mountains as well,

2:20.4

with some decent snow.

2:23.5

So it wasn't the snow, but it was more playing soccer on snow.

2:24.8

That was new to me.
