Summary
These two episodes with Dr. David and Amanda Erickson are packed with practical ideas for the little years. Truthfully, it can be overwhelming to determine how to discipline, redirect, manage chaos while not breaking the spirit of your child. I see a cultural shift from one extreme (punishing behavior out of kids and using fear) to another extreme - letting the kids run the house with no rules.Â
This couple has an approach that I really believe in - they combine child development with scriptural truth. I wish I had had them when my kids were younger. They focus on “what to do” vs “what not to do” which puts an upfront emphasis on your family’s values and expectations.Â
My favorite part is when they talk about how to take a biblical value like “trustworthiness” and live it out in the home. As you listen to this episode, I am praying you feel equipped and not discouraged. Their way isn’t a prescribed formula - it’s a parenting philosophy that has many benefits and ideas attached to it.
When my kids were little, it was so chaotic at times and I would get so overwhelmed at my lack of parenting principles and felt like I kept messing it up. You are not alone. Don’t give up! This work and effort will pay off.
In this episode, we chat about:
- Cultural shifts in parenting styles
- How to build trust and honesty in parentingÂ
- How to redirect behavior and manage chaos
- Ideas for discipline and consequences
Enjoy!
Courtney

| 0:45.2 | Hello, friends. So let me tell you about a time. There was a lollipop in Larson's diaper. Yes, |
| 0:49.6 | it's been a minute since she's had a lollipop and a diaper. But do y'all remember, and you're in those days, if you've got little kids, you're like, I will do anything to get through this target |
| 0:53.0 | or through this doctor's appointment. And so lollipops were off to know what I'm just like here. Take this. It'll distract her for like 12 whole seconds and then we'll get on with our day. But I think we were leaving a haircut place where she got a lollipop as a prize. And then she must have decided at some point in the car seat, she didn't want the lollipop. So she put it down. And somehow she must have had on bloomers or |
| 1:11.1 | something, but that lollipop found its way into the side of her diaper. So imagine that my surprise |
| 1:16.7 | later, when I'm changing her diaper and I'm like, literally how did a lollipop get in here? Like, |

| 1:50.2 | obey their mom and dad, but I feel so lost. And I remember feeling that way. There's a lot of conflicting |
| 1:55.3 | information. There was maybe one school of thought that was very militant and very much like, let's punish our kids and |
| 2:01.2 | just, you know, make sure they know what's right and wrong. And then I think there's a culture of |
| 2:05.0 | people swinging way far to the other side that's like, well, let's just not do that. Let's just |
