In today's podcast, I'm going to be addressing a topic that's actually pretty high

And it's one of these things where you either know it or you don't.

But if you don't know it, you're going to get a lot of questions wrong on your test, right?

This is one of those things where it's going to be like, maybe like three, four questions on your exams,

but it's just one of these things where if you put in just a little bit of effort, you can really get many of these questions right.

And today we're going to be focusing on herbal supplements,

herbal supplements and the USMLEs. Let's begin. The first one, what if they give you a question about a patient? They tell you that this patient comes to the physician. And this patient is taking

something for their mood, you know, something that they found at a herbal store. They're taking

it for their mood. And then they then ask you on the exam, which of the following should the patient be instructed

about or warned about on the USMALs? Well, I would really hope you're thinking about St. John's

Wart, right? St. John's Wart, many people tend to use it for like depression, right? They use it for depression, right? Or they can say, oh, you know, I'm having troubles with attention, right?

Or I'm having sleep issues or I'm feeling anxious, right?

Many people take St. John's work for many things.

But typically, many people take it as a herbal supplement to help them with their mood,

especially like depressive symptoms.

Now, the thing is, you need to warn these patients that St. John's

ward is a cytochrome P450 inducer, right? It's a Cydogram P450 inducer. So because it's a P450

inducer, it can accelerate the metabolism of many different drugs. And if you accelerate the

metabolism of many of these different drugs, that can cause you to get in a lot of trouble, right?
