On July 4th, 1921 in Chicago, a 12-year-old boy found a pistol in a car.

The car belonged to his father's friend and it was unlocked.

The boy grabbed the pistol and ran to a nearby alley.

Some kids were playing in the alley and the boy thought it would be fun to scare them.

He fired some shots in the air and the kids were definitely scared,

but one of them also screamed in pain.

One of the bullets ricocheted and hit the kid in the jaw.

The boy with the gun was sent to a reformatory for a year.

It was the first major run in with the law for Lester Gillis.

After his release, 13-year-old Lester stole cars regularly and he got caught.

He went back to jail for another year and a half.

When he was released, he went back to stealing cars and he got caught again.

Lester Gillis had been in jail three times before he was 18 years old,

but all that was just a warm-up.
