Summary

If there’s ever a time to disconnect and take a breath, this is it. With all the non-stop zoom videos and conference calls, it’s very easy to feel overwhelmed and worn out. Digital minimalists are all around us. They're the calm, happy people who can hold long conversations without furtive glances at their phones. They can get lost in a good book, a woodworking project, or a leisurely morning run. They don't experience "fear of missing out" because they already know which activities provide them meaning and satisfaction. Man oh man, that is music to my ears! That’s why I’m so excited to re-run our interview with Cal Newport who was in-studio a while back to talk about his latest book, Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World. This weekend we are looking back at an interview that I conducted way back in the beginning of

2019. It certainly seems like a world away from where we are today, but I thought it made a ton of sense to rebroadcast this interview with

Cal Newport. He is an author. He is an academic. His first book was called Deep Work and this is a book that actually led to his book that I was interviewing him about digital minimalism. Really, it's a question of how can we navigate, certainly as many of us remain working from home,

the question about how we can navigate our tech saturated world is really in the forefront.

So in this first part of our interview, we are talking about the cesspool that is social media and what led to the digital

minimalism movement. What is the best financial or career decision you've ever made?

1:43.4

Oh, that's interesting.

1:45.4

Well, probably the best career decision was all the way back as an undergrad.

1:52.0

It was computer science major, and was trying to figure out,

1:56.1

do I want to go into industry?

1:58.4

So I had a job offer from Microsoft, so stock and good salary, or do I want to go to grad school?

2:03.7

Very little salary, no stock options.

2:06.6

But the idea I had was if I go to grad school, I will have enough flexibility that I can keep writing books while continuing to do my computer science education.

2:17.0

That's interesting because there was also a certain amount of you could sort of have a nice steady stream of income if you kind of made it through and got on a tenure track,

but also indulge your creative side and be really, have excitement around that and find your passion.
