Summary

Since the inquest into Marion Barter's disappearance was adjourned a couple of months ago, devastating floods and Covid have been playing havoc with lives in this part of Australia. However, we've been doing some digging for information behind the scenes as we prepare for Mr Blum to take the stand for three final days.

It's been six weeks since we were in Byron Bay, and now we're heading back again.

During our absence, much of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland were hit by torrential rain causing terrible flooding.

The city of Brisbane, where Sally Layden and most of the Lady vanishes team live, was swamped by a rain bomb that lasted several days.

Hundreds of properties were inundated when rivers burst their banks or by stormwater unable to get away.

Our sound designer, Mark Wright, was cut off by floodwaters for several days.

Our writer, Sally Eels, spent several hours stacking sandbags and bailing water from her backyard.

When that rain slowly shifted, it caused immense damage south of the border.

One of the areas hit was Balana, where Mr Blum first appeared in court.

The town was evacuated once, but then residents were flooded in just weeks later.

Hardest hit, perhaps, was a nearby town of Lismore, which had almost 150 millimetres of rain in just 24 hours.
