About The Show

The Distraction is Defector's flagship podcast about sports (and movies, and art, and sandwiches, and certain coastal states) from longtime writers Drew Magary and David Roth. Every week, Drew and Roth tackle subjects, both serious and impossibly stupid, with a parade of guests from around the world of sports and media joining in the fun! Roth and Drew also field Funbag questions from Defector readers, answer listener voicemails, and get upset about the number of people who use speakerphone while in a public bathroom stall. This is a show where everything matters, because everyone could use a Distraction. Head to defector.com for more info.

We're back. We're back. It's a distraction. I'm true. That's not Roth. Roth isn't here. It's Tom Lay, the editor-in-chief of Defector. Why did I invite my boss onto this podcast, Tom? That was pretty stupid of me. You invited your boss onto this podcast because you were out of options and I had nothing better to do.

0:23.0

So here we are.

0:24.0

That is 100% true.

0:25.3

I asked a solid five people before I asked you, not because I don't like you, Tom.

0:31.0

I think you're great.

0:32.1

But I was trying to find someone who might be less busy than the editor-in-chief of Defector.

0:36.9

For people who don't know, Roth went away with his wife for a romantic weekend in Savannah, Georgia.

0:45.3

Savannah, Georgia.

0:46.0

Yeah, he's there to see the Savannah bananas, talk to the Savannah bananas, try to join the Savannah bananas.

0:52.2

He's having a great time.

0:53.4

Justin Halper constantly texts me Savannah Bananas clips to be like, these people are a fucking cult. Why aren't you on this? And I'm like, we're working on it. We had a, did you, did you send them the one we did about their charity? That was a good Savannah Banana story. I did, but it wasn't enough. He wants them taken down on a regular basis. I'm with him on that.

1:11.9

I also want more, and I want them expelled from the country, essentially.

1:16.2

I agree.

1:17.2

So Roth was in Savannah with his wife, and they were touring, you know, all the sort of ghost tours.

1:23.4

And, you know, everyone acting like plantations still exist and stuff like that.

1:26.8

They're doing all.

1:27.5

And then this big snowstorm hit the Northeast, so they got stranded for a couple of extra days.

1:31.9

And he could not podcast from where he was.

1:34.8

And I told him not to podcast because I thought he should prioritize having a nice time in Savannah with all of the, all of the denizens of that fair, fail city.

1:46.6

Yeah. Have you been to Savannah? No, I've been to Charleston, but when we went, we didn't book anything.

1:51.6

Yeah. So we were just walking around and I was in a pissy mood the whole time and my wife was like,

1:55.9

eh, so we didn't, we didn't quite do that correctly. But Savannah definitely, I've been there once.
