Summary

We don't even debate whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie. This film and its first sequel are always included in Chris' annual holiday movie marathon and the whole gang thought it would make for an appropriately spirited discussion. So come out to the coast. We'll get together. Have a few laughs.

Topics include: the project's unusual origins and how many times it very nearly developed into something else entirely, the way the script skillfully layers in everything we need to know about John & Holly's relationship, how clumsy some of the other exposition is, why Hans Gruber is still the best villain in the franchise, plot holes big enough to drive a certain ambulance through, the use of sidekicks in this film vs the later entries, why the best Die Hard sequel isn't even actually a Die Hard movie, and much much more!

Hey guys, a few quick notes before we get started. I imagine some of you might feel sort of shortchanged by our decision to do die hard instead of maybe a more traditional Christmas movie, especially when we asked you for suggestions a little while back and then seemingly completely ignored them. But that's not really what happened. I mean, ultimately, yes, that's exactly what happened.

0:21.9

But the thing is, a lot of your recommendations did make it into our final round of contenders.

0:27.1

And then I think it was Carlos who just tossed diehard into the mix out of nowhere.

0:31.0

And I really liked the idea of doing something a little different this year.

0:34.9

So blame me if you're upset about it. It was my call.

0:38.8

And quite honestly, isn't Die Hard just the grown-up version of Home Alone anyways? So I think if

0:44.5

that one counts, then this one absolutely does as well. I also want to clarify two things we

0:49.8

mention about the die-hard sequels because you know, at certain points in this conversation.

0:54.9

First, the title of die hard too. I say in this episode that the full title of that movie is

1:00.4

die hard to die harder. And I say that as if it's a stone cold fact when what I meant was as a kid,

1:08.2

that's what I believed the full title to be. There's some ambiguity here. This is a

1:13.0

very strange situation. Here's what I think happened. I think Die Harder was just intended to be

1:18.4

the tagline. And I think Carlos says as much in this episode that that's what he always thought it was.

1:23.4

I think somewhere along the way, it just became appropriated as the official subtitle, even though that is not what the opening credits say.

1:31.3

And the credits, it's just diehard too.

1:33.3

I'm looking at my box set of the first three movies, though, and right here on the case, they're using die harder as a subtitle.

1:40.3

So I'm not sure they even know what the fuck is up anymore. So call it whatever you want.

1:46.1

I don't think anybody's wrong in this case. But the reason I'm pointing it out is that I know

1:50.3

someone somewhere would hear that part of the episode and, you know, actually, and I know this

1:56.5

because I would probably be that guy if this weren't my show. The other thing I want to mention

2:01.7

really quick is when we talk about live free or die hard, I forgot to say that a lot of you outside

2:07.5

the U.S. know that one as diehard 4.0, which I think is a much better title, quite honestly.
