When I asked NPR's Sydney Madden, for one detail, one story to explain hip-hop

mogul Sean Diddy Combs' cultural dominance, she knew exactly where to start

with Diddy's infamous white parties.

These parties were major affairs,

held in the Mogul's home in the Hamptons each summer. There's lots of music,

lots of booze. They were over the top. One year, when the party was on July 4th, Diddy arrived

with an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, along with a couple

of bodyguards to keep it safe.

Yeah, he did.

Yeah, there's photos of it with models and football team owners and tech

millionaires and rappers all schmoozing in the same place in his white parties in the

early 2000s which were

legendary but like this is the level of money connections power and impact that

he's had for a really long time.

Until recently, this image of a guy so powerful,

he could use our country's founding documents as a party favor is what I think a lot of people

might have pictured when they thought about Diddy.

Over the last 30 years he's been a rapper, a producer, a fashion designer, an entrepreneur,

he has been both ubiquitous and in charge.

The past six months have complicated this image,

and then the past week shattered it.
