Summary

Mike Bird and Tom Wright tackle three big listener questions. First: did Jesus know he was God—and if so, in what sense? Tom explores how Jesus reframes what we mean by “God,” drawing on the Gospels and Philippians 2. Next: contemplative practices. From the Jesus Prayer to the Daily Office, Tom offers gracious guidance on praying in ways that keep Jesus at the centre while avoiding rigid one-size-fits-all rules. Finally: sacred places and “thin” places—can locations carry a memory of God’s presence? What about dark places marked by evil? With stories from Switzerland to Lindisfarne, Tom reflects on holiness, discernment and hope. Now, Tom, I believe you've been in Switzerland. I hope the politics was neutral and the chocolate was delicious.

0:46.2

Yeah, both of the above were true. Problem was it was so hot that one could hardly think about politics and that the chocolate was always likely to melt.

0:54.5

As happens in Switzerland in summer. Now, were you in the German part, the French part or the Italian part?

1:01.1

Well, actually, a combination of German and French, I was in Freiburg, which is just along from Bern and up from Geneva.

1:10.6

So language on the street could have in German, could have been

French. It goes either way. And that was fun. I'm so impressed with the Swiss ability to translate.

And I actually preached in English.

I thought about trying to do it in German, but there was an expert translator beside me.

But they were also people who were in simultaneous translation into Swiss German

as opposed to high German and also into Ukrainian, because they have quite a lot of

Ukrainian refugees in that church. So it's a whole different experience when all that stuff is going on. I bet. I bet. Well, it sounds great. What also is great is the questions we have for you this week, Tom. We've got questions about did Jesus know he was God, contemplative spiritual practices,

2:02.7

and also about sacred places. So let's kick off. We've got a question from Bill Coombe in Dubai

2:09.9

about, did Jesus know he was God? Bill asks, I do not think that Jesus knew he was divine in the same way that we know we are cold or hot, happy or sad male or female.
