I'm the host Scott Feinberg and my guest today is one of the great television talk show hosts of all time,

a legend of late night, Dick Cavett.

The Nebraska-born 80-year-old first burst onto the scene nearly a half century ago.

After graduating from Yale University, he moved to New York to pursue acting, but ultimately

found work as a writer for the tonight show

initially under Jack Parr then for a series of guest hosts and ultimately for Par's

permanent successor fellow Nebraska Johnny Carson.

After a few years, Kavitz Witt and Wisdom led him to try stand-up comedy,

which in turn led to him being booked as a guest on various talk shows,

one of which caught the eye of ABC, which recruited him to host his own talk show.

A daytime program called this morning and later renamed Dick eventually led to a move to

primetime and then to the late night slot that had been vacated by the Joey Bishop Show.

And it was there that Cavitchine for five years spanning the end of 1969 through the beginning of 1975.

Other incarnations of the Dick Cavett show later emerged on CBS,

PBS, USA, C, NBC, and TCM,

but it is the ABC years with which Kavit remains most closely associated.
