The fascination of the sea and of the surf that sang mystic melodies to her,

it lured Star Faithful to moments of ecstasy as a toddling child

and a life that seemed inexorably linked by fate with the restless ocean.

Star Faithful, a child of the sea, and death lay on seashore sands with waves playing over her. Even as in life, as a creeping baby,

her first memories were bound up with moments when she crawled into the water and was not afraid.

Now, as the tragedy of her death touches two continents like the ocean she loved, the strange

chain of events which from earliest life kept her close to the sea have assumed new significance.

It is as if it had all been planned to an inevitable climax.

No one knows exactly when the sea caught her fancy, but it must have

been soon after she and her family moved to Brookline, Massachusetts, after her birth in

Evanston, Illinois. As a baby, she was happiest when creeping up and down the beach at

Centerville near her home. Despite

watching eyes, she would crawl into the water, let the waves lap over her and play. She

learned to swim before she stood on her two feet and toddled along the sand. She looked forward

to her days at the shore. Often, she played in the sand. She looked forward to her days at the shore. Often she played in the sand and

listened to the mystery suggested by a seashell held tightly against one ear. On one occasion,

she mischievously picked up a crab and put it in the rompers of a little playmate. Growing up into an

innocent, energetic child, she spent every possible moment by the sea. She swam and played with

her little dog, often bounding along the beach with him at her side, carefree, happy, and contented.

Swimming was her main diversion. She always swam in fresh water or salt, wherever she happened
