Hello everybody it's Kevin from the epic gardening show I think that might be my first

musical intro in over 200 episodes but I'm feeling crazy so okay let's get to it though. What are we talking about today? We're talking about

Dianthus which is a massive plant family that has some beautiful flowers that are just

wonderful and we should all be adding them to our garden.

So I know it is a little bit late in the season, but you know,

I'm just trying to keep you motivated during that fall and winter if you're in an area where you can't grow.

So let's talk about how to care for these guys and what are they, how do we

troubleshoot them.

Let's just get into it.

So first of all, there are over 300 species of

Dianthus and there are thousands of different cultivars that have been bred from those

species. And so that's a massive, massive amount of plants. Of course we can't cover

those in this podcast, but we can talk

about some of the more famous ones. So let's go ahead and get into that. First we've got

Dianthus Carofilis, which is the Carnation. So the Royal Horticultural Society has given quite a number of different Carnations,

its prestigious award of Garden Merit, and for good reason. So the carnation has become one of the most popular

flowers in the entire world. In fact, the state of Ohio has a flower, a state flower that's

a cultivar of this particular

dianthus. And so needless to say it's a beautiful flower.

And as far as looks go, it is a pinkish purple, but the one that I think is most interesting is a white flower that has

streaks of pinkish red that come to a head at the edges of the leaves which are

absolutely beautiful.
