Summary
(*This is a reissue of a Dangerous History Episode first published in Aug. 2015)
In this episode, CJ discusses two different paradigms of what war is supposed to be and how it is supposed to be fought. One is the Western (or European) Way, which originated in Greece and from there filtered through the Romans to become the dominant paradigm among Westerners to this day. The other is the Eastern (or Asian) Way, which originated in China and from there filtered to other parts of the Asian world and beyond, and which forms the intellectual basis of much of modern unconventional tactics and strategy.
Join CJ as he discusses:
- The origins of the Western Way and how it has evolved over the centuries
- The origins of the Eastern Way and how it has evolved over the centuries
- Why this matters to understanding the modern world in general, and the history of modern unconventional warfare in particular

| 0:00.0 | Hey, everybody, this is CJ in April of 2026, and yes, I do still live, but it has not been easy. |
| 0:11.0 | I know I sound like a broken record every time I come out with an episode after being quiet for a while, |
| 0:17.4 | and, you know, there's some new cluster of disasters that have fallen upon me and my |
| 0:22.3 | immediate family, but I swear it just keeps happening in rapid succession. And not only that, |
| 0:28.1 | but it seems like over time it just keeps, you know, getting worse and more intense in terms of |
| 0:33.9 | what actually happens. But I'm not going to get into that too much here. |
| 0:38.9 | Other than to say over the space of the last two months, |
| 0:42.9 | I had my wife go into the hospital with something pretty serious and alarming |
| 0:47.5 | and being there for a full week. |
| 0:50.1 | Then shortly after she got out and came home, |
| 0:54.0 | her mother, obviously my mother-in-law, went into the hospital and unfortunately didn't make it out alive. |
| 1:01.3 | And then one week to the day after my mother-in-law passed away, I myself had to call 911 on myself and go to the hospital. And I wouldn't say that I almost |
| 1:15.1 | died, but I was in for almost a full week and I had multiple major things going on. And it was by |
| 1:24.1 | far the longest extent of time I've ever been in the hospital as the patient. And it was by far the longest extent of time I've ever been in the hospital as the patient, |
| 1:29.6 | and it was by far the worst pain that I've ever experienced in my life, and it, you know, |
| 1:36.5 | stretched over multiple days, and it was also the sickest I've ever been in my life. |
| 1:41.7 | And I got out of the hospital, I think three weeks ago today from when I'm |
| 1:45.8 | recording this intro, and I'm still not all the way recovered. But I won't get into any more |
| 1:51.6 | detail than that here. I'm going to maybe put a special episode out for those of you who are |
| 1:56.6 | interested just explaining what happened, because it was absolutely horrible. But anyway, now that I'm |
| 2:02.3 | finally able to sort of talk a little bit and record, I'm going to be trying to put some stuff out. |
| 2:08.0 | And the first thing that I wanted to put out is an episode from all the way back in the summer |
